If you enter this region from the main level from the east, a dazed miner will stop and talk with you, telling you to go to the SW, near the sulfurous flats. It's up to you if you want to do that just yet. You'll be sent to do it no matter what when you finally reach the castle, but getting it done and over with now isn't too bad an idea. You may want to wait till you've reached Camp Samuel's first, so that you have a base of operations.
There are a number of merchants around, some have good items for sale (Lyun), but most are best used to sell things. Head south to the sulfurous flats, and you'll find a few caches.
In the sublevel, some aranea seers are to the south, they guard a body with some tinker's gloves.
